A graphic labeled “Columbia Hill Campus PBIS Raffle Winners” shows a group of middle school students standing in a school hallway in front of wooden doors. The students are lined up side by side, holding various prizes such as lunchboxes, boxes, and sports equipment. A stylized school mascot graphic appears on the left, and ticket illustrations decorate the corners of the image.

In 7th grade science classes, students have been learning about weather, water, and climates around the world. Last week, they chose a real-world location facing an environmental challenge, such as deforestation, drought, glacier melting, or natural disasters, and researched the issue, identified its root causes—especially those connected to greenhouse gases—and examined how it impacts Earth’s systems. Students also developed solution-based plans that included immediate community actions, possible policy changes, and long-term goals.

We’re so proud of their critical thinking, creativity, and dedication to understanding and protecting our planet!

Hill Campus AP Environmental Science students were tasked with designing two projects focused on rainwater collection and ORT (organic waste) collection for implementation in the Edible Garden, and presenting their proposals to CBSD staff and community members.

During the first presentation, students outlined a cafeteria-based system for collecting food waste to be directly added to compost, along with improvements to the garden’s existing three-tier composting system to increase efficiency.

In the second presentation, students designed a rainwater collection system that uses gutters on the garden shed to collect rainwater into a barrel, which can then be integrated with the garden’s current irrigation system.

Congratulations to our student presenters.

At the Hill Campus, we’re building a Community of Readers!

At Columbia Middle School, 7th graders are reading Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis, exploring the story of Bud Caldwell and his journey during the Great Depression. Through reading, discussion, and reflection, they are connecting with the characters, history, and themes of perseverance and hope.

Our students are discovering the joy of reading—one page, one story, and one connection at a time.

Students from the CHS Theater Department participated in a field trip to the Fulton Theatre where they explored behind-the-scenes careers that bring a stage production to life.

From lighting design and set construction to costume creation, students had the opportunity to learn directly from industry professionals. Opportunities like this give our students a greater appreciation for the collaborative effort behind the spotlight — and may even inspire the next generation of designers, technicians, and theater professionals.
