In 7th grade science classes, students have been learning about weather, water, and climates around the world. Last week, they chose a real-world location facing an environmental challenge, such as deforestation, drought, glacier melting, or natural disasters, and researched the issue, identified its root causes—especially those connected to greenhouse gases—and examined how it impacts Earth’s systems. Students also developed solution-based plans that included immediate community actions, possible policy changes, and long-term goals.

We’re so proud of their critical thinking, creativity, and dedication to understanding and protecting our planet!

Hill Campus AP Environmental Science students were tasked with designing two projects focused on rainwater collection and ORT (organic waste) collection for implementation in the Edible Garden, and presenting their proposals to CBSD staff and community members.

During the first presentation, students outlined a cafeteria-based system for collecting food waste to be directly added to compost, along with improvements to the garden’s existing three-tier composting system to increase efficiency.

In the second presentation, students designed a rainwater collection system that uses gutters on the garden shed to collect rainwater into a barrel, which can then be integrated with the garden’s current irrigation system.

Congratulations to our student presenters.
