CBSD Inclement Weather Procedures

Snow

Welcome to the CBSD Inclement Weather Headquarters

It is our goal to provide families with the needed information regarding school delays and closings during the cold weather season. The most accurate information for school delays and closings will go out to families through the Remind App via text and email, posted to the district’s website and Facebook page, as well as reported on the following television/news outlets: WGAL and Lancaster Online. No alert means school is open!

When will you make the decision, one way or the other?

If possible, decisions to delay or close schools will be made no later than 6:30 a.m. in order to provide families adequate time to be notified and to seek and find daycare and alternative family plans, if needed.  Early notification also allows our transportation, maintenance, and food service teams to prepare for necessary adjustments and modifications.

However, please be aware that while we may make the decision before 6:30 a.m., it will take time to update the radio, television and other communication channels, as well as for the media outlets to post this information.  We will work as quickly as possible, but please keep in mind that all local school districts, businesses, non-profit organizations, etc., are also contacting these media outlets during the same time period.

We always keep the safety of our students and staff at the forefront of our decision-making. Still, we all know that weather forecasts can be unpredictable.  As we head into the winter season, please remember to always check our website, and Facebook to receive up-to-date information on closings and delays.

TYPES OF CLOSURES/DELAYS

If there is a delay or closure due to inclement weather, here it what it means for you.

VIRTUAL LEARNING DAYS

It is our priority to provide in-person instruction for the 2023-2024 school year; however, we recognize the weather is unpredictable! In the event of a school closure, we may utilize a Virtual Learning Day (PDE-approved Flexible Instructional Day). Virtual Learning Days may be used as a school day that has been cancelled due to inclement weather or school closure due to COVID-19. Students and families will receive notification through text and/or email, the district’s website, Facebook page, as well as reported on the local radio and television stations.

VIRTUAL LEARNING DAY SCHEDULE AND EXPECTATIONS

Students will use the 2-hour delay schedule. All students will log into school with a link sent by their teacher. Attendance of your child will be determined by their attendance during live instruction. Students and parents/guardians may use the first two hours of the school day to access support from their teachers during teacher office hours.

  • Park Elementary will begin at 10:30 AM

  • Taylor Middle will begin at 10:00 AM

  • Hill Campus will begin at 10:00 AM

During Virtual Learning, students:

  • must participate in live instruction that mirrors the classroom experience, with a combination of live teaching, opportunities for students to raise their hand and ask questions, group work, interactive activities, and other opportunities for students to engage in collaboration, and/or differentiated activities AND will be able to access their teacher during their regularly scheduled classes.

  • have learning experiences that are manageable but also challenging.

  • participate in group work and/or independent work.

  • will receive feedback on their learning.

GRAB AND GO MEALS

The school district will make every effort to continue to provide free breakfast and lunch for K-12 students on Virtual Learning Days. Weather permitting, we will communicate grab and go pick up times and locations on our website, Facebook, and through @CBSDAlert Notification Group on Remind.

INCLEMENT WEATHER MAKE-UP DAYS

Please be aware that our last student day could change due to unpredictable months of weather and school days off. We will update the calendar on our website with make-up days and the tentative last student day of school following inclement weather closings, if makeup days are needed.

CTC STUDENTS

If Columbia Borough School District closes due to inclement weather, no transportation will be provided to Lancaster County Career & Technical Center.

LCCTC will follow what a majority of sending school districts are doing in the face of inclement weather.

  • Delays – If more than half of sending districts are on a two-hour delay, so will the LCCTC.  If the LCCTC delays classes, our announcements will detail when classes will resume that day.

  • Flexible Instruction Day/Virtual Instruction – The LCCTC may choose to hold a Flexible Instruction Day/Virtual Instruction due to inclement weather.  If this occurs, we will let students and families know about the situation.  Students should log onto the Canvas Learning System for information on the day’s instruction.

  • Cancellation – If the weather is bad enough to completely close the buildings and cancel all operations in a majority of districts, so will the LCCTC.

See the LCCTC website for more information.
