Columbia High/Middle School Hill Campus

Beginning November 4th, new hours will go into effect at the Taylor Campus Playground in order to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and the community in light of Daylight Savings Time changes. The playground will be closed each week from Monday through Thursday. However, the playground will remain open Friday evenings through Sundays. Additionally, the playground will remain open during extended breaks from school so that students and the community can enjoy during daytime hours. As a reminder, everyone enjoying this space should treat it with care and respect—this includes playground equipment, tables, and the garden area. We ask that families practice safe behavior while on the playground, and keep in mind that the playground should always be vacated by dusk when open. Security cameras are in use and are monitored regularly to ensure that guidelines are being followed. If you observe any concerns while using the playground, please contact the Columbia Borough Police Department. Thank you for helping us keep the playground safe and welcoming for all!

Free Webinar for Students and Families Sunday, Nov. 3, 6-7 P.M. Eastern Time Are you a student-athlete dreaming of playing your sport at the NCAA level? Invest in your future and spend an hour understanding the requirements and how to prepare for NCAA certification. Join NCAA Eligibility Center staff, who will walk you through what you need to do to compete at the NCAA Division I, II or III level. Staff will be answering questions live during the presentation, so come prepared to learn how to take your game to the next level!

On Monday, students had the opportunity to tour and eat at Millersville University. The weather was perfect and students loved seeing the pond with the geese Miller and Sville! Students viewed dorm halls, academic buildings, and of course the dining hall. The next day students were able to go to Gettysburg college, a small liberal arts college with a deep history. Students had an information session asking a ton of great questions surrounding Gettysburg’s unique approach to majors in college. The dining hall was great with the highlight being the cookies!

Columbia High School Scholarships CBSD appreciates the incredible support our community has provided throughout the years providing scholarships to our students. Any organization, group, individual or business that would like to add a scholarship opportunity for our students can complete the form linked above. Please contact jjesberger@columbiabsd.org if you have questions about this process. One form must be completed for each separate scholarship you intend to give. In order to be included for students graduating in 2025, all Forms must be returned to the Hill Campus or emailed to jjesberger@columbiabsd.org by November 8, 2024. Important Information Students will apply for all scholarships using one standard application, but will identify the scholarships for which they qualify. Once all student packets are received (mid-February), they will be sorted and sent to the Scholarship Contacts in order to select their own recipients using the applications provided. If the Scholarship Contact requests that CHS selects the recipients, they will be notified of those recipients when that is complete. Any checks or certificates will need to be delivered to CHS by mid-May in order to be distributed at Awards Night. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support of our CHS students.

Did you ever wonder what our teachers do on professional development days?? Lots of things to create a great school experience for students! Here is just ONE example of the many things our teachers did on Friday: The social studies department went on a tour through town with Chris Vera. The social studies team can now better inform their students on Columbia and its vast history as a stop on the Underground Railroad, Wrights Ferry Mansion, and the historic Markethouse.

This past Tuesday we held an Application Day that featured instant decisions from Washington and Jefferson College, Pennsylvania College of Technology, York College, and Kutztown University. All of our students that signed up for instant decisions were accepted ON THE SPOT! Along with this, Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and Messiah College offered information sessions and answered student’s questions.

Today, Mr. Blair’s local history students had the opportunity to explore an 18th century home at Historic Rock Ford! They discussed colonial and revolutionary themes while getting a real view of life in the 1700s.

Fire Fridays at CHS are never something to miss! For this experiment, Mr. Zettlemoyer's class trapped flammable gas from a spray bottle into bubbles from a mixture of water and dish soap. Students soaked their arms in water, then picked up the bubbles and held a lighter close. This heated up the gas and caused them to burn! The water in the bubbles and on the hands captures the heat.
